Activity 4.2.1- Applying My Environmental Policy Framework
Problem Statement-
In this conflict the issue is that hydrofracking is used to do practice by extracting natural gasses or oils taken from geological shell rock formations. Moreover, this practice is important to the environment policy, and with that said it's good to say that it'll be used for a long time. Based on the article given by Cohen it tells us that hydrofracking has been used for decades. Furthermore, this process consists of a lot of things that would help it work smoothly. For example, based on the article it states that the things needed are water, sand, and consists of all of them being injected along with chemicals at high pressures. When talking about how these things are used it shows how it looks like they value what they have to get the outcomes which is oil or natural gasses. Moreover, because of wanting to get more of what they have, it shows that in the article a lot of land is taken because of these actions. In the article it tells us that in 2012 the US Energy Information Agency or known as (EIA) stated that the US contained 482 trillion cubic feet of shell gas potential. Overall, this shows that these actions not only show the importance they have on hydrofracking, but as well as the value they have in investing in this project for it to have been going on for so long. However, just because it's been happening for a long time doesn't mean it has its consequences. Hydrofracking can be technically complex, but dangerous. Hydrofracking can cause outburst for the water that we drink. In the article it states how when it spreads to water we drink it can cause a few illnesses like cancer. Overall, because of the water that they use to be injected into the 8,000 whole it can cause over millions of gallons of water wasted that can as well be mixed with other harmful chemicals.
Economic Frame-
Hydrofracking has been used for decades causing it to spread to many parts of the country causing it to take a lot of land. As far as 2012 the Energy Information Agency shows that the US has a total of 482 trillion cubic feet that can help them get the results they want. However, with the more land they get the more resources they'll use which is expensive. The project for hydrofracking has grown in its gross domestic income of $76.9 billion alone in 2010, and has increased since considering that in 2015 $118.2 billion was in the gross domestic product. Overall, at the end it states how by 2035 the numbers will be three times higher with it being at $231.1 billion. However, not all of it would be bad considering the jobs that were created, but still affects them in how much it'll be to maintain it. In 2015 it stated that the shell gas industry supported 870,000 jobs along with it generating more than $933 billion in taxes. The taxes involved revenue, local, state and federal government, and will be that way for the next 25 years.
Values Frame-
For this one it's clear to say how what they value a lot is how they've been operating for decades in being committed to having natural gasses and oils. Furthermore, these kinds of projects are valued because of the outcomes it shows them. Throughout the times of committing these actions, it's shown to be bringing a lot of money considering that humans use it a lot. Overall, hydrofracking is something that these shell oil industries value a lot because it's what helps them not only help us, but as well as bringing in a lot of money.
Conflict Frame-
In terms of conflict I believe that there are people reacting to these differently in terms of not only how it affects us, but also the environment. When talking about the conflicts there are a few that allow us to show how they react and the result of that was a good outcome. Moreover, these kinds of things involve the way we live, for example due to hydrofracking it's the reason it could affect our water. In the article because of all the water being used it could release chemicals that could cause us illness to the point where it could kill us. Furthermore, with the environment it involves more of how much of it is being taken and how much is being wasted depending on the results they'd get. But the reaction of the industries in wanting to avoid a bigger conflict they do respond well with it in wanting to do things differently regarding using chemicals and usage on environments.
Views of Nature-
Based on the articles when it considers nature its for it being dangerous considering the state it's in. Furthermore, because of all the spacing within the drills and how they function, it could change later on how the aesthetics of the rural and residential areas look. Moreover, studies made by Cornell University shows that because of the venting regarding the vents and well leaks, chemicals such as methane are released into the atmosphere. Moreover, methane being released into the air isn't the only thing that it's affecting. In the process of hydrofracking when it comes to the extraction part it tends to release methane and with that comes risks. Those risks are that it can be spreading into the water that we drink making it unsafe to consume. Furthermore, another way this affects the views of nature is that if at any point the methane gas that is released gets to a greenhouse gas it can again be released into the atmosphere and make it not only unsafe for humans, but as well as nature itself.
Risks-
The risks shown in these conflicts show many things that could go wrong at any time. Despite it being a dangerous thing to do it is something that can affect us all regarding environments, the atmospheres, and even the water we drink. Hydrofracking has its benefits, but it also has its consequences in being rageful in taking a lot of space.
